A Lamp for My Feet

Psalm 119:105

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. (NIV)

 

I enjoy speckle trout fishing at night under lights, “especially when they are on a feeding frenzy” and come out to play. One of my friends introduced me to the excitement of night fishing in 1975. Fishing after dark is a particular joy during the super-hot days of June, July and August here in Houston. During those months when you step outside it’s like walking into an oven.
 

One of the most exciting things about night fishing is spot casting, when there is clear water and you can see the trout boiling the water “pop, pop”. If there is a full moon reflecting off of the water, it seems almost as bright as daytime but very pretty to look at. But sometimes I fish when there is no moon, and it’s pitch black. On those nights your surroundings become somewhat unknown. Being alone is sort of scary.

 

How many men in our culture are trying to navigate life in in pitch darkness, with no light? Scripture tells us that Jesus is the light,

 

God’s Word reminds us that His Word is a light for guiding our paths. It is His Lamp that makes the way clear for us. Are you trusting in God’s Word to show you the way, or are you “moving blindly?”

 

If you’re “moving blindly” in the dark, don’t be surprised when you slam into a life-altering obstacle.

 

Netting a fish at night can be a bit tricky. A high-lumen flashlight mounted on your net handle, illuminating the net opening, can be a big help. You can pay high dollar for a special mount for a flashlight. But I’ve found that a small block placed under the flashlight handle, the light beam aimed down toward the net opening and secured with good ol’ duct tape works just as well and costs a lot less.
